Every even-numbered year (2010, 2012, 2014…) elections take place in the United States on the first Tuesday in November preceded by a Monday in November (that means never on November 1). Such is the case again this Tuesday, November 2.
The Congress consists of two houses: the Senate (100 members) and the House of Representatives (435 members) Senators are elected for six years while representatives are elected for two. Every two years, one-third of the Senate is elected.
At the state level, thirty-seven governors are up for election this year.
Before the elections, polls are regularly taken to predict which candidates will win. For those of you who are interested, the following charts show who is expected to win easily, by a narrow margin or where it will be a toss-up (Patt-Situation).
Despite all the campaigning that goes on, often starting a year in advance, voter apathy is an important issue. That is why it is important to “rock the boat, go out and vote”. This public advertisement slogan will be at least as important as in previous years.
It will be interesting to see how the predictions will turn out on Wednesday. For Business English, this is relevant, especially if you are doing business in the States.
